OLD TRAIL//
The Old Trail project required the full range of Collins Engineering’s expertise and experience in planning, designing, and engineering. Old Trail is a mixed use neighborhood design project in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Charlottesville, Virginia, featuring a vibrant, walkable community with a village center.
Prior to the design phase, CE completed the land planning of Old Trail, including the rezoning of the project for up to 2,200 units and 250,000 square feet of commercial office area. CE’s civil engineering design provided form and function, providing spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains while connecting homes in the neighborhood with a village center. The result is a 1.5 mile road design that sets the landscape and architectural designs of the development in relief against mountain views.
In concert with approving agencies and Old Trail’s neighbors, CE planned and designed the utility infrastructure for Old Trail to bring adequate sanitary sewer and water to the neighborhood and village. CE continues to monitor and develop this infrastructure as the development grows.
The environmental features of Old Trail, including Lickinghole Creek, farm ponds, wetlands, tree preservation areas, and rolling fields are what make Old Trail attractive to families and businesses. CE’s creative response to these landscape features preserves Old Trail’s ecological features through storm water management and erosion and sediment control. Even as Old Trail expands and develops, CE’s planning and design ensures that the natural features that attract residents to Old Trail are protected.
